Reid State Community College has announced the hiring of Jason Hopkins as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach, bringing a proven program-builder with deep junior-college roots to lead the Lions into their next era of ACCC and NJCAA competition.
Hopkins arrives at Reid State after serving as Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Big Bend Community College, where he engineered a notable turnaround. Taking over a four-win program, Hopkins led the Vikings to 13 wins by his third year, establishing a trajectory built on discipline and player development. His previous experience includes a tenure at Cochise College, where the program posted a 58–7 record and finished #11 nationally during his final two years as an assistant.
“I believe in building a program that can stand the test of time,” Hopkins said. “Reid State has tremendous potential, and I’m excited to establish a culture rooted in discipline, development and long-term commitment to our student-athletes”.
A former junior-college athlete who played Division I basketball at Lipscomb University, Hopkins brings a personal understanding of the JUCO pathway. His programs have maintained a 100% sophomore graduation rate, and his teams at Big Bend achieved a 3.24 cumulative GPA.
“Coach Hopkins brings a championship pedigree and a proven track record of developing student-athletes both on and off the court,” said Reid State Athletic Director Brac Brady. “His commitment to academic excellence and his extensive recruiting network make him the ideal leader to elevate our men’s basketball program within the ACCC.”
Reid State President Dr. Coretta Boykin emphasized the hire as a key part of the college's broader growth. “This effort is about preparing our region for long-term growth, and our athletic programs are a vital part of that mission,” said Dr. Boykin. “Coach Hopkins’ emphasis on character and leadership development aligns perfectly with our goal to empower individuals and transform our community.”
Hopkins will be joined in Evergreen by his wife, Jenelyn, and their daughters, Ehlleerose and Jai’el. They also have two college-aged daughters, Abeni and Genesis, the latter of whom plays basketball for Concordia University Irvine.
